Professor Jan Gawęcki is the WULS-SGGW Doctor Honoris Causa
”This year it is a honourable event for the university that the title of WULS-SGGW Doctor Honoris Causa is received by Professor Jan Gawęck. The title was given to the Professor by the Senate at the request of the Faculty of Food Sciences and Human Nutrition for exceptional contribution to the development of food sciences and human nutrition.” – said Professor Alojzy Szymanski, the Rector of the university, during the ceremony of awarding the honorary doctorate.
Professor Gawęcki was born on 8 August 1944 in Skierniewice. His father, Kazimierz Gawęcki, was a professor and the Rector of the University of Life Sciences in Poznan. Jan Gawęcki graduated from the university in 1967, and seven years later, at the same department, defended his doctoral thesis. He received the title of professor of natural sciences in 1991. At the Poznań University of Life Sciences, he co-founded theHuman Nutrition Department of Health, where he works until now. Professor Gawęcki studies problems of food and human nutrition. He has authored more than 400 items, including 129 original creative works, published in renowned international journals. His credits include books, monographs and scripts. The professor has also merit in the field of scientific progress. In the team which was lead by him, several doctoral theses and five rehabilitation (post-doc qualifications) were defended, and three of his associates were promoted as full professors.
The ceremony of giving the honorary doctorate to Professor John Gawęcki inaugurated this year’s celebration of WULS-SGGW – the days of the Warsaw Agricultural University of Life Sciences, which was established by the WULS-SGGW in 2000 to commemorate the first inauguration of the academic year in Warsaw after the World War II. For 13 years, the university has commemorated in this way the date of May 15th, when the Polish national anthem sounded at a Warsaw university. This moment, that was historic not only for WULS-SGGW, but for the whole Polish higher education, is stressed by organizing important academic events at this time.
During the ceremony, diplomas were delivered to hab. doctors and doctors. The Honorary Award “for Merits for WULS-SGGW” was also awarded.
The Rector of WULS-SGGW, Professor Alojzy Szymański, directing his message to hab. doctors and doctors, said: „Today is the crowning of a long way that was full of sacrifices, which was overcome not only by you, but also by your loved ones. This can only be explained with the great passion for finding the truth and the desire to build a better world. We would like to congratulate you on your perseverance and success, and wish you that your passion never stops. I truly believe that you will proudly represent the University, that you will be committed to take the great challenge – the responsibility for shaping the knowledge of the society, for economic and civilization growth of the country and the world, and in the context of globalization – for peace in the world.
